Mr. and Mrs. Garmash are considered two of the finest Romantic Impressionists of our day. Their incredible talent is only matched by their love and career stories. In similar fashion to the determination of his artwork, Mr. Garmash courted his future wife, after seeing her for but a moment, by painting her image all over her hometown while she slept. She immediately recognized the passion with which this man cared so dearly and married him shortly thereafter.

Several years after their marriage, Mr. Garmash began a painting of their two-year old daughter, Polina. However, Polina found the painting during her father's absence and decided to embark upon her own artistic career. Ms. Garmash, after seeing what her daughter had done and not wanting her husband to be upset, fixed the painting using her own training, packed it up and gave it to him for submission. Mr. Garmash submitted the painting for review and was praised for completing his best work ever. He was surprised to see the "new" painting and immediately recognized his wife's hand. The award-winning artists have painted together ever since, and many of their limited editions have sold out.

To the Native American, a spiritual force was the source of all life and everything in nature had a soul, or a spirit, independent of its physical being. Their entire world was connected spiritually, with the physical and the mystical living side by side. This spirituality was the fundamental nature of the Plains Indian and the expanse of the West and the grandeur of its landscape only enforced this notion.

"It is important to show the American Indian as he appears in his natural surroundings," says Howard Terpning. "He lives with Mother Earth, and his spirituality is bound to his environment. Many of my paintings are inspired by something in nature. The thing I look for in a landscape is how it can be dramatized to the best advantage in the painting."

Here is an advance look at the newest Howard Terpning Personal Commission, "Paper That Speaks Two Ways, Treaty Signing", which is the third in the series of four Howard Terpning Personal Commissions from the Greenwich Workshop. The story behind the painting is below the framing suggestions.

Part of his personal collection, this Terpning 58" x 70" masterpiece has never been offered for sale as an original work and is being seen by the public for the first time as a Fine Art Canvas.

In the painting, we see a gathering of Cheyenne and Sioux men intently listening to a man who is an orator among his people. The words of the peace commission have been translated to him and he is expressing his distrust of those words. Terpning wanted the entire focus of the painting to be on the native people, so we see only the corner of a table and the shoes of the commissioner. The scene depicted here is not a specific treaty signing event, but it is loosely patterned after the Fort Laramie treaty of 1868. The title comes from the Indian expression that the treaty always said one thing to the white man and quite another to the native people.

The Museum Edition will be limited to no more than 50 in the entire edition, so if you would like to reserve one for your collection please call us right away. An artist's proof (A.P. or AP) in modern printing practice is a reproduction of a work of art that is printed before the limited edition copies. It is usually identical to the limited edition, but are not counted in the edition size. The number made is far less than the limited edition. They belong to the artist, who may sell them or give them away, or simply keep them in their personal collection.

Artist's proofs were once slightly better in appearance than the limited edition, because the printing quality was slightly higher for the first few printed. With modern reproduction technologies, the quality remains constant, however some collectors still prefer AP's because of their rarity, and direct connection to the artist.

A "long lost" early Doolittle has been found and is being released as a limited edition giclée on paper. This classic Doolittle was painted in 1977 and was purchased by a collector, and has remained elusive until now. It is being offered as a limited edition print for the first time ever. "The Arrival" features Bev Doolittle's trademark style of storytelling through design. Its subject is a group Plains Indians who have encountered a herd of bison, with dramatic storm clouds nearby.

"The Arrival"will be reproduced with an eye towards tradition but with the most up-to-date technology. This Fine Art Gilcée will be created on the highest quality Hahnemuhle German Etching fine art textured paper. Deckled edges allow for either a traditional or floating presentation of the framed image.

If you bought an early Bev Doolittle print for $95, which is now worth $7,000, or own other art treasures, or if you are just adding your first piece to your collection, knowing how to protect your art investment is very good information to have.

A one of a kind art purchase is irreplaceable, however there are some steps you can take to help prevent damage of your art treasures, and there are ways to protect your financial investment in case damage or loss does occur.

Here are a few tips:

Part I--Preventing Damage

*Keep artwork out of direct sunlight to avoid fade
*Don't place expensive artwork over a fireplace to avoid excessive heat
*Ensure framing is done to the highest quality standards. Poorly done framing can lead to damage of your artwork.
*Use Acrylic with UV protection rather than glass whenever possible
*When not on display, ensure all artwork is stored above the ground level

Fine art on canvas or paper that's not properly protected can be damaged by light, temperature, acids, humidity, poor handling, insects, and pollution. Good custom framing enhances the experience of art, and protects and preserves the work

Museum or conservation quality standards have been established by the Library of Congress, along with other nationally known galleries, to preserve prints in the best possible condition, and to prevent any future damage, or acid burning that can be caused by inappropriate matting and framing. By adhering to these high standards of excellence, you can be assured that your prints and other valuable collectibles will be well preserved for many generations.

Glazing is a flat sheet of transparent material, such as glass or acrylic sheeting, which covers and protects the surface of the artwork while allowing the full beauty to be viewed. Acrylic sheeting (e.g. Plexiglas or Lucite) is often used instead of glass, as it has the benefits of being unbreakable and lighter in weight, and offers greater protection from ultraviolet radiation.

Ultraviolet radiation in the home, from filtered sunlight, fluorescent fixtures, and even ordinary light bulbs is the main cause of fade in prints (not to mention furniture, drapery and carpets). Acrylic sheeting with ultraviolet protection reduces the ultraviolet radiation affecting your art by 97%.

We almost always recommend the use of acrylic sheeting over glass. The one exception would be if a medium such as soft pencil, charcoal, pastel is present on the surface of the artwork. In this case, glass should be used, as the static charge present on the acrylic sheet could attract loose particles of such media. Where a composition is in no danger of flaking, acrylic with ultra-violet protection is the best choice, and is the museum quality standard.

Part II--Insurance

*Don't assume your artwork is covered by your homeowner's policy--check with your agent and also inquire about limits and deductibles.
*Take photos of your art, including photos of the artist signature, and serial numbers where appropriate
*Obtain an appraisal if your artwork has increased significantly in value. Check with your insurance company for their requirements.
* If you are planning a move, make sure your insurance covers your high-end art in transit

Part III--Certificates of Authenticity & Other Documents

* Whenever possible, keep Certificates of Authenticity & other related documents and photos in a safe deposit box, rather than at home to protect it in case of fire, flood or simply being misplaced.
*Keep your bill of sale or receipt with the Certificate of Authenticity to document your purchase.

Arnold Friberg--Legendary Painter of Prayer at Valley Forge, Ten Commandments, Passes at 96

My friend, the legendary artist, Arnold Friberg passed away recently at age 96. He truly lived an extraordinary life.

American painter Arnold Friberg is best known for his masterpiece "Prayer at Valley Forge" depicting George Washington praying beside his horse at Valley Forge, which was on display at the White House during the Reagan administration, and which was recently valued at 12 Million dollars. Limited Editions are in the personal collections of Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush.

Arnold received an Academy Award nomination for his paintings of the 10 Commandments which were commissioned by Cecil B. DeMille. The Royal Family of England also commissioned his paintings,, for Buckingham Palace, and he was admitted as a lifetime member of the Royal Society of Artists.

I remember sitting in Arnold's living room, years ago and I was struck by the fact that he continued to work on paintings as we spoke, that would seem to be finished works, but Arnold put extra care into each painting, some being worked on for periods of many years.

Arnold said he considered himself a "storyteller" and he wanted to make sure that his stories communicated clearly to the viewer, which they certainly do.

Arnold's wonderful legacy lives on, a fact that I know he is proud of and even speaks about in the video below. In this video, Arnold himself discusses the inspiration, the research and the historical accuracy of his magnificent painting "Prayer at Valley Forge". We are fortunate to have some of the original Limited Editions of this painting signed by Arnold, available to collectors, as well as some one of a kind artist sketches. It is with deep sadness that we must inform you of the passing of the very talented artist Pino Dangelico.

Pino, born in the South of Italy, grew up during World War II, in the care of the remaining matriarchal society. The memories of these formative years would be the sustenance of his life's work as a fine art painter.

These masterful paintings evocative of his deep respect and appreciation for women, have been collected by fans and peers, alike. Our favorite story took place at the Prix de West Art Show and Sale. A draw was held for the privilege of buying the Pino original.

It was the great Howard Terpning who, against all rules, stacked the ballot box in order to secure the coveted Pino painting. It was a turning point for the figurative painter. Up until 2008, Pino accepted portrait commissions for the individual and for entire families, saying he enjoyed the challenge of capturing a person's true essence. These masterpieces remain, as testimonies to the very intimate relationship between artist and subject. The world is richer for his great contribution, and Pino will be missed by all.

The original acrylic painting of Beyond Negotiations by the extremely popular artist Bev Doolittle is available for the first time ever.

This magnificent painting was made into limited edition prints that sold out at the publisher very quickly. 350 Museum Edition Canvases were produced for $2,950 each and 3,750 Limited Edition Canvases were produced for $795 each, and all of them were purchased.

Many Bev Doolittle sold out limited editions have skyrocketed in value over time. Her painting "Bugged Bear" for example, which was originally issued as a limited edition print with a price of $85, sold out, and today sells in the range of $7,000-$8,000 each on the secondary market.

James Reynolds contribution to the joy and beauty of the world is greatly appreciated by all who are lucky enough to view his art. His legacy is a wonderful gift to us all, and he will live on through his art. We are sure he is smiling at us now.

James Reynolds was born in a Standard Oil lease house in 1926 and raised in Taft, California. As a boy, he spent summers at his grandmother’s Nevada City hotel, which was situated just beyond the infamous Donner Pass and literally above the south fork of the Yuba River, supported by stilts. In Nevada City he experienced firsthand the remnants of the Old West and heard the stories of that time.

Although he dabbled with drawing during grade school, Reynolds didn’t investigate it seriously until after World War II. The trip home from China was a long and boring one; luckily, the sailor on the bunk beside him had a painting kit. Reynolds took to it immediately and, upon returning to America, enrolled in the Kann Institute of Art in Beverly Hills. Reynolds soon found work in Hollywood. For almost two decades, he sketched storyboards and sets for most of the major studios. Finally, after a particularly grueling assignment designing and helping to apply a body of tattoos for the film version of The Illustrated Man, he moved to Sedona, Arizona, and never looked back.

Reynolds is considered to be one of the finest artists of the Western experience. He was a member of the National Academy of Western Art (NAWA) and of the Cowboy Artists of America. In 1992, for his painting Arizona Cowboys, NAWA awarded Reynolds the Gold Award for Oil Painting, the Nona Jean Hulsey Buyer’s Choice Award, and the Prix de West. Reynolds’ other honors include Gold Awards from NAWA, and, from the Cowboy Artists of America, gold medals for best oil painting, Colt Awards, two George Phippen Memorial Awards and the Thomas Moran Memorial Award at the Autry National Center's "Masters of the American West Exhibition".

Greenwich Artists Shine At Autry Show

Howard Terpning's Million Dollar Original Painting

The Masters of the American West Fine Art Exhibition and Sale was once again the center of the western art world this past weekend. In a gathering of the genre’s finest, a number of the highest prices paid and top awards went to Greenwich artists.

Thomas Moran Memorial Award For Painting:
Howard Terpning’s The Sound of a Distant Bugle

Gene Autry Memorial Award:
Mian Situ (three works) The Intruder, Angel’s Camp, California, 1849; Bridge to the Spirit World; Over the Next Rise

Bob Kuhn Wildlife Award:
Tucker Smith’s Gardner’s Hole

The Masters Silent Bid was made up entirely of Greenwich Artists and set the mark for original art sales in 2010:

New Bonnie Marris Release

I particularly like this beautiful piece that was just released by The Greenwich Workshop. It is called Morning Muses by Bonnie Marris. There were only 50 signed and numbered Giclee Canvases with an image size of 48 x 24 in this edition and 125 signed and numbered Giclee Canvases with an image size of 32 x 16.

The passion Bonnie Marris has for wilderness, for animals, and for light and color come together in her art, as you can see in her newest release, Morning Muses.Marris has become a very successful fixture at the annual Masters of the American West Fine Art Exhibition and Sale at the Autry National Center of the American West and 2010 promises to be no exception.
